Should I bother?

Spare tire subwoofer from a Mazda6 spotted at the junkyard. Should I bother trying to repurpose this in my car or just go for a normal box. I’m not looking to rattle windows, just add a little bottom end to the sound.

Hell yeah. I never would have thought those to be a thing. Now I feel like I need to move my sub and amp...

I know factory Bose systems in some cars use weird voltages, impedances, and other things that set them apart from “normal” options. If this sub is in any way like that, more trouble than it’s worth, other than to maybe stick a new sub, etc. in the housing. The form factor is convenient, even if nothing else is.

Really? I remember reading Crutchfield catalogs in the early 90s and getting excited to see which new spare tire subs came out this season.

I mean, most of them are like 6” bandpass boxes, but great form factor!

Now that spare tires are disappearing more and more, I would expect these to be really popular.

As an example, the Bose system in my 2002 Miata is 100watts per speaker (two speakers each with their own amp) at .5 ohms. Sounds shockingly good for two door speakers though.

As long as you can anchor it, why not?

The Bose system in my A6 was the most frustrating thing ever. Especially when something on it broke.

right, easier and cheaper to get an under seat sub...sound better too.

NO. I had that exact thing in my old Acura RSX and it was useless.

You need to one day find the spare tire subwoofer our of a Challenger. This these puts out some serious bass.

The only problem I can see with spare tires disappearing is that the actual spare tire tubs will disappear too.
